SITHNEY

ST SITHNEY CHURCH: Last Sunday morning, at the Holy Eucharist service, Rev Harry Pugh presented Mr Eric Mildren with a DVD player and recorder in recognition of his 30 years' service as churchwarden at St Sithney. Eric's predecessor, the late Fred Mildren, held this office for many years. Now we are pleased that Ron has been elected as churchwarden. Eric was very appreciative of his present and wished Ron and Lucy best wishes as churchwardens.

The Parochial Church Council of St Sithney Church, with the approval of the Bishop of St Germans, has appointed Canon Eric Mildren, Lay Canon of Truro Cathedral, as churchwarden emeritus. Eric also received a special certificate painted and framed by Lucy Matthews and signed by the Rev Pugh.

Mrs Beth Caddick has resigned as PCC secretary. Beth was unable to attend the service to receive her gift but it will be presented to her as soon as possible.

Evensong has taken place at St Sithney for as long as most people can remember. Since early May, the vicar and churchwardens have invited everyone to five o'clock tea in church on Sunday afternoons before the service. There will be no evensong this Sunday, June 1, but it will resume on Sunday, June 8.

Tea in the garden at the home of Mr and Mrs Schofield took place on Monday, despite the inclement weather. There were various stalls, raffles and cakes. Ron Mildren thanked the Schofields for their hospitality. The sum of £128 was raised for church funds.

Well done to all of the children who made a special effort this week to either walk or cycle for at least part of their journey to school. The local suthority has estimated that for Crowan Primary the use of cars amounted to £57 per day being spent on petrol (£10,8887 per academic year). With petrol costs, that could be significantly more now. The school's carbon footprint is below average, but still amounted to 7.1 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide last year (one tonne correlates to the volume of a 10-meter wide, 25-meter long and 2-meter deep swimming pool).

The winners of the Walk To School Week prize draw were: Jessica in Class 2 and Taz in Class 3 who chose a football, a stopwatch and some elbow and knee pads as prizes. The class with the highest percentage of walkers this week was: Class 5 with 90.6%.

All entries for the KS1 colouring competition and the KS2 poetry competition will be sent off the County Hall now for judging with the chance to win a digital camera.

Crazy Hair Day - there were some weird and wacky hairdos on show and thanks to the 50p contributions from the children, we have raised a further £42.80 to offset the cost of transporting the Year 6 children to their school camp.

This week it was the turn of the Year 6 boys and girls to take part in the local Kwik Cricket tournament. The threatened rain didn't materialise and everyone had a great time. The team won two out of its three matches but won't progress further this time around.

The school team arrived at Tregurtha Downs at 8.30am and were up at 6am to plait the manes and tails to make the ponies look nice and to have a chance of the best turned out team. Then Mr Davis walked the course with the team. All the children rode well and their behaviour and team spirit was a credit to Crowan School.

There was a steady trickle of people to the car boot sale on Saturday. Thanks to the PTFA committee for organising this event along with another successful disco on the Friday night.
