A NORTH Petherton butcher scooped a national award for his outstanding burgers during a food industry exhibition.

Malcolm Pyne, owner of P&B Pyne butchers, was named national champion for speciality burger for his 8oz cheddar steak burgers at the Foodex Meatex exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham.

Malcolm was up against tough competition from butchers across the country but managed to impress the judges with his tasty steak combination of cheddar, garlic, horseradish and parsley.

He said: "The most important part of making a prize-winning burger is the correct ingredients. If you start off with good quality ingredients, you end up with a good quality product.

"I obtain all my ingredients locally and you just have to look outside the window to see we have the best grazing grass, which contributes to the best quality beef."

Before the event, Malcolm offered his customers a taster of his burger to decide whether it was good enough for competition.

He added: "The feedback I received was phenomenal, not just from the customers but from the staff too. I have won awards for my sausages in the past but never for burgers.

"Winning this award has had the biggest impact on the success of this business. We have had people coming from across the South-West to try our award winning burgers. It is unbelievable."
