Students from University College Falmouth have spent May preparing for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in September.

Eight students from the BA(Hons) Journalism course will be joining the fleet when it embarks from Falmouth and recording their adventures on blogs that will be updated daily from the ships.

The students were thrown into the deep end last Sunday when they crewed the 55ft Falmouth Sail Training Ship the 'Hardiesse'.

Skipper Chris Stone made it clear to the students that they would be sailing the vessel themselves.

First year student Gavin Embley enjoyed the trip.

"The whole day was an exhausting yet fascinating insight into the world of sailing. I can't wait to sail the Falmouth to Funchal trip," he said.

Chris Stone complimented his cre. "It was a good day's sailing and the crew was eager and compliant; a pleasure to work with," he said.

The students are now preparing a booklet about Falmouth's relationship with the Tall Ships Regatta which they will publish in August and working on the website which will host their blogs of the 2008 event.
