Council admits failure as residents attack "shoddy" road surface

Investigations are underway into why resurfacing work carried out on the main road out of The Lizard has "failed."

Following complaints to the Packet from residents about the "bodged" work carried out between The Lizard and Mullion Holiday Park - the main route out of the village - divisional surveyor Mike Peters admitted that the surface dressing had failed.

Mr Peters, from Cornwall county council, said: "We do surface dressing every year. Unfortunately it's failed. We do get the odd failure every now and again and we are investigating it."

A meeting is due to be held between the surface manager and the area surveyor, to discuss how to resolve the problem.

Mr Peters said it was not clear why the work had failed, but added that there could be a number of contributory factors such as heavy rain fall shortly after the work was carried out and the stone chippings themselves.

"We will investigate it and we do plan to put it right," he confirmed.

Currently the road is covered in loose stone chippings, patches of which have come away to reveal the old surface underneath.

The most likely solution is for the patches to be repaired and then the whole surface given another coating.

The condition of the road has caused residents of The Lizard, who are forced to drive on the road every day, to contact the Packet.

Jeremy Allerton, vice chairman of Landewednack parish council, described the state of the road as "disgusting." He said: "It's dangerous and basically it's a complete bodge. We pay a lot of road tax and fuel tax - where does it go? It's a very busy road, an A-class road. Everybody in the village is up in arms about it."

He called for the road to be fully Tarmaced, adding: "The Ruan Minor road has had proper Tarmac and our main road gets this shoddy stuff. It's disgraceful."
