IF BRIDGWATER Jupiter thought they were in for an easy ride against Galmington's Parkfield, they were wrong. Parkfield looked the more confident side at the start, leading 7-6 at quarter time. RAF to stay at St Mawgan until December

The Ministry of Defence announced today that they have reached an agreement with Cornwall county council to delay the termination of airfield operations at RAF St Mawgan by four months to December 1, to ensure a smooth transition from military to civilian operations at Newquay Cornwall Airport. The extension will enable the county council to complete the complex transition works required to convert the airfield from a military to a civil operation, whilst maintaining continuity of service for military and commercial operators, secure a Civil Operating Licence and complete an overnight handover.  more...

TO celebrate a very successful first year, Bishopswood Ladies held an End of Year Dinner at The Flintlock Inn at Marsh.It was pleasant to relax over an excellent meal, and judging by the noise levels achieved, the evening was greatly enjoyed by everyone! The group has had a very varied programme over the last year, with talks, hands-on demonstrations and outings, as well as purely social occasions, and members now look forward to another year of activity and interest. It has been very satisfying to transform the old Otterford and Bishopswood WI into the new Bishopswood Ladies, which now has a larger membership than the original group.  more...

AT the AGM of the Great Western Society - Taunton Group, on February 15, the chairman, Stuart Trott gave a résumé of last year's activities including meetings and tours. David Brabner presented the financial report and the existing committee was re-elected. Richard Antliff reported on changes at the society's HQ at Didcot both in terms of personnel and future plans for the museum site. Richard will be involved with specific design projects and he outlined some future proposals.  more...

WI: In the absence of the president, Gill Dennis conducted the March meeting in professional style. Several visitors were welcomed and three new members were given welcome packs'. After the minutes of the previous meeting were read by the assistant secretary, Jenny Grabham, thanks were given to Maureen Johnston for hosting the February meeting and for leading an energetic walk from the Half Moon in Clayhidon. Anne Nicholls confirmed with the members the promises given of cakes and help with refreshments at the local Hedging Competition. Gloria Dobinson read out the list of those going to the Spring Council meeting in Exeter and also updated the members on forthcoming county events. She announced the theme and competition for the Spring Group meeting to be held this time by Dunkeswell WI.  more...

RSPB Notes

BULGING at the seams, that was the hide at Catcott Lows recently when a larger-than-usual number of Taunton RSPB local group members met for a field meeting. Less than half those present could find seats to view the flooded meadow and watch the wigeon, teal, pintail, shoveler, shelduck, tufted duck, mute swan, Canada geese and a distant bar-headed goose that were on the reserve.  more...
