Rolling out the mat for new bowls machine

From the Burnham & Highbridge Weekly News, first published Tuesday 15th Jan 2008.

EAST Brent bowls club members are breathing a sigh of relief after the successful installation of a new winding machine set to save their backs from further pain.

The group were struggling to roll out the mat used in a game of bowls because so many members suffer from bad backs, but after a Big Lottery grant of £1,000 the new machine will do the hard work for them.

Secretary Sheila Hatton explained: "It was becoming such a struggle we decided we needed some help, so with the help of the Big Lottery Awards for all we secured the funding for the machine.

"The village hall committee supplied the remaining money needed and now we can enjoy playing in relative comfort."

Staunch club member and engineer Richard Ellis built the machine and it was finally ready for use last week (Tuesday) when a ceremonial evening was held to mark the occasion.

Sheila added: "The evening went really well and we're all absolutely delighted that the machine is now up and running."
