Duchy College celebrate

From the Falmouth Packet, first published Friday 8th Jun 2007.

Duchy College Rosewarne, part of Cornwall College, is celebrating a first for the South West by offering a BSc in Horticulture from September. The degree course is validated by the University of Plymouth, as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative.

The BSc can be studied as a full degree at Duchy College, with students studying a related foundation degree for two years, and finishing with the BSc for their final year.

Alternatively, students who have studied related foundation degrees elsewhere can come to Duchy College and top up' to a BSc with a year long course. Study is flexible; the course can be studied full or part time, making it open to a wider audience. Students can choose to specialise in the areas of landscaping, garden design and commercial plant production.

Horticulture as a career is experiencing a major resurgence due to the high profile of the industry in the media, highlighting the diversity of the profession. Facilities at Duchy College Rosewarne include 46 hectares of land, 0.75 hectares of glass and polytunnel structures and a commercial garden centre.

The College also has strong links with the industry and other horticulturally based bodies, which gives students valuable experience.

Marshall Hutchens, Horticulture course manager at Duchy College said; "We are absolutely delighted to be offering the BSc in Horticulture from September. With so many related further and higher education Horticulture courses being run in the South West it's great that Duchy College can offer students the chance to top up to a full BSc degree. The Horticulture team are looking forward to delivering the course from September."

John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "Duchy College offering the first BSc in Horticulture in the South West is a great achievement for the college and staff alike. We continuously strive to increase and improve our offering, ensuring that students reach their maximum potential and leave us with the best qualification possible."
