Youngsters perform well

From the Falmouth Packet, first published Friday 8th Jun 2007.

A STRONG contingent of five Cornwall Youth Badminton players travelled to Poole, Dorset, to take part in the end-of-season South West u15 "Restricted" Badminton Championships, writes John Tresidder.

The players - Ross Lashbrook, Patrick Davis ( Launceston) Connor Moore and Bronwen Wotton, both Camborne-based First Edition and Johanna Philp (Port Isaac) - competed against the best players from across the South West counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Avon, with Guernsey also in contention.

In the Boys' singles, Ross Lashbrook led the line by achieving top spot in his first round group. Ross then moved into a semi-final losing a hard game against the eventual winner, Mathew Mcmillan, from Dorset. Both Patrick and Connor achieved wins in their groups, but failed to progress. In the Girls' singles Jo had two wins from three matches, but missed out on further progression.

Bronwen took four straight wins in her group and then competed well in the semi-final against Emily Hollis (Avon), who went on to become the eventual champion.

In the doubles both girls teamed up with partners from other counties. Jo, in a hard group, missed out on further progress, whilst Bronwen achieved top spot in her group, securing three wins, before going down, 21-20, in a nail-biting semi-final.

Connor partnered a scratch partner, but still achieved two wins in his group - a most credible achievement. It was then left to the "Cornish" pairing of Ross and Patrick to fly the flag.

The talented youngsters took an early initiative with two fine opening wins and went on to defeat a Badminton England silver-ranked established pairing from Dorset - an excellent victory - to move into the semi-finals and then the final.

The final against a Devon outfit, was hard fought and they eventually finished as runners up.

All players who competed over the two weekends did so with great spirit. Under 13 and u15s: Ben Cooper, Lee Chapple, Imogen Powell, Bethany Wotton (all First Edition) and Tony Marshall (Bude).

Under 17s: Tom Lyle (Launceston), Henry Sherwood (Callington), Claire Whitmore, Emily James and Bronwen Wotton (all First Edition).
