Midweek match: Bridgwater Doctors 159-5 bt Goathurst 62 by 97 runs
DOCTORS' John Ogle and Rob Adcock were largely untroubled in a well-paced 50 opening partnership. Against steady bowling by Rob Hardwick and Angus McDonagh, they accumulated mainly in ones and twos and built a sound platform. The introduction of Paddy MacLennan into the attack induced Adcock (22) to give a catch to Andrew Clarke at midwicket. Clarke came on at the other end and was unlucky to have two catches dropped in his first over as Ogle looked to accelerate.
Soon afterwards, Ogle retired for a cultured 40 not out and MacLennan (3-30) used the opportunity well, his skill in moving the ball both ways being rewarded with two quick wickets.
Sam Powell joined his father Keith and they played in the only way they know, taking the attack to the bowlers. There was a plentiful supply of big, booming drives as boundaries flowed and the scoring rate soared.
Keith (26) fell to a catch by MacLennan off Clarke (2-36), but Sam's fine, unbeaten 40 propelled the final score to a very challenging 159.
The visitors' response started disastrously, as Jeremy Budd's perfectly-pitched off break bowled Dan Clarkson, then Adcock took a truly remarkable, one-handed catch to dismiss McDonagh off Andrew Paisley (1-17). The fielder fell full length onto the neighbouring concrete artificial wicket in taking the chance.
MacLennan and John Hardwick set about repairing the damage and were looking good when MacLennan (10) inexplicably charged down the pitch at Budd (2-18) and lost his off stump.
In the next over, Hardwick (19) attempted a non-existent second run as the ball was in the hands of Paisley at cover and thereupon the innings fell apart.
There was a wicket each for Matt House (1-0) and Peter Reed (1-4), the latter courtesy of an extraordinary, over-the-shoulder catch, taken by David Gwynne Jones at midwicket, and the match was soon over as Phil Barker (4-13) clinically docked the tail.
