West Som League Div Two (June 2): West Monkton (5) 102 lost to Cannington (26) 152-7 by 50 runs

TABLE-topping Cannington chalked up their fifth consecutive maximum-points league win of the season at West Monkton on the Saturday before last.

After visiting skipper Bob Bowyer had been invited to bat first, openers Ryan Dray and Tim Nash shared what turned out to be the highest stand of the match, putting on 47. Both batted well in their shot-selection and running between the wickets, with Dray first to go for 22 and Nash (20) following soon afterwards.

Young Craig Thomas was out for eight, leaving Cannington 67-3. Gary Stone fell shortly afterwards, leaving Dave Jones and Simon Larcombe to add precious runs, which were at a premium on a slow scoring pitch.

Another sound knock of 28 by Jones of 28 ended when he was run out by some excellent fielding from the home side. Larcombe was back to form with the bat and his knock of 32 proved decisive as he guided his side to a reasonable total.

Steve King fell for eight in the quest for runs and Larcombe was run out for 32 by another effective piece of fielding. At 139-7, Robbie Gamlin and Nick "The Village" Eaton, both not out, ensured that the visitors used up their allotted overs, as the innings closed on a respectable 151-7. K Pietfield was the pick of the Monkton attack with 3-15.

The home side made the worst possible start, losing a wicket in the third over, to a smart catch in the covers by Jones off Larcombe. Ally Curran removed the other opener to leave Monkton in trouble.

They tried to consolidate, but the visitors had other ideas. Change bowlers Gamlin and Stone went about their business, as catches in the outfield by Thomas and Dray (2) saw Monkton lose their way. Only J Merry (23) and N Binding (17) showed any resistance.

No 7 batsman G Fitzpatrick finished unbeaten on 16 as Gamlin, with his fine swing bowling, and wily spinner Stone took four wickets apiece, reducing Monkton to 102 all out in the 28th over. Stone took 4-16 and Gamlin 4-30.
