From the Bridgwater Mercury, first published Sunday 24th Jun 2007.
WHAT a start to the official coarse-fishing season - tremendous bags of bream on the Huntspill and Kings Sedgemoor Drain. Bream have been rolling on the surface, which is a great sign.
Also, the Bridgwater-Taunton Canal has come up trumps, with huge bags of tench and bream from Fordgate, upstream of the top car park. Baits are best, with casters, worms and corn favourite.
Chilton Trinity's two-day festival, sponsored by Mega Baits attracted a class field and the winner was Kevin Perry, of Team Clevedon Veals.
Bridgwater AA's first match on the Huntspill saw big bream showing and they were caught throughout the length of the match.
First on the day, with 64lbs on the feeder, was your truly, followed by Kevin Perry (52lbs 8ozs) and Shane Portlock, with 47lbs 6ozs. Many thanks to Andy Dannally for considering disabled anglers.
I am surprised not to have seen bailiffs on the bank as yet, because they are pretty keen early on in the new season.
Remember, anglers under the age of 12 don't need a licence, so let's see more youngsters on the bank.
A £25 bait voucher was presented to Neil Macreaby with a catch of 160lbs of bream, caught on method mix and big bream perfect cat mix.
£30 for a senior BAA licence is good value when you think you can fish for 12 months a year on some of our waters locally. They are as good if not better than anywhere in the country.
This month's tribute is to a young man who gave his life serving his country 25 years ago in the Falklands War. He was not only one of my customers, but also my friend and my thoughts are with his dad Jim and brother, Robin.
He always tried to beat me on the dumbell tricep extensions exercise. You are not forgotten and never will be, Andy.
