Productions at the Brewhouse

YEARS ago, the Brewhouse would put on large productions by major touring companies. When that became uneconomic, the gap was filled largely with Alan Ayckbourn, amateurs, and Abba tributes. Nothing wrong with any of those, in moderation; dependable, but unexciting. The new director has turned the small auditorium from a liability into an asset, finding a broad range of distinctive and different productions and events for Taunton. In 30 years of theatregoing, I have never seen anything so unusual and fascinating on any stage as Derevo last week. I have been to the Brewhouse five times so far this year, and missed out on some other productions that I would have liked to see. I went on average no more than twice a year in the preceding five years. Something has changed, and definitely for the better.  more...
