Surf competition at Poldhu success

From the Falmouth Packet, first published Sunday 11th Nov 2007.

Small but clean and fun waves made perfect conditions for a great new surf competition, the South Coaster held at Poldhu. There were 38 entries in three divisions, under 16 girls and under 14 and 16 boys, making it an exciting competition.

The South Coaster was organised and run by Kerrier District Council's Leisure Team, with support from Porthleven Surf Club. Judging and presentations from acclaimed local surfers Sam and Jake Boex, Robyn Davies and Dan "Mole" Joel added enthusiasm and encouragement for all the competitors.

In the girls under 16s Poppy Barlow age 15 from St Ives took first place ahead of Catherine Day-Smith, 14 from Mullion, Sofia Miah age 10 from Porthleven came third, with Alex Day- Smith, 14 from Mullion in fourth.

In the boys under 14s Will Hamling, 13 from Constantine took the first place, ahead of Ryan Ryley, 13 from Penryn, Seb Thomas 13 from Ashton got third and was followed by Johan Grant, 13 from Helston in fourth.

The under 16s boys saw Joe Humphries, 15 from St Ives take first place ahead of Josh Hill, 15 from St Ives, Andy Beswick, 16 from Porthleven took third and was followed by Josh Barrow, Hayle in fourth.

Councillor Loveday Jenkin said: "I am pleased that the competition was a success as the Leisure team put so much effort into getting it off the ground. They felt that there was the need for a friendly and local competition on the south coast and the number of entries proves that they were right. A good day was had by everyone concerned."

Contest organiser Dai Lawton added: "The idea was to run a competition for young people on the South coast as the focus is usually on the North. Contests should always be competitive but at the same time I wanted to keep a relaxed, friendly and sociable atmosphere at the South Coaster and with the help of Porthleven Surf Club and the great attitude of the competitors I think we achieved this. I've had a lot of positive feedback from the event and intend to make it a regular thing."

David Barlow father of two competitors said: "Congratulations on organising the best run and friendliest surf competition we have attended. It was a credit to all the people and organisations involved and the whole of the family had a great day out. Thank you and look forward to participating in future events."

It is hoped that another competition will be organised in the new year.
