Village News From Around Taunton

Coffee shop funds

NORTH Curry Community Coffee Shop, has just donated its first year's surplus of over £3,600 to 25 charities and local organizations, each receiving an amount depending on the hours worked behind the counter by each of the 60 volunteers who nominated a specific worthy cause. Opened in May 2006, the coffee shop has become a meeting place for villagers, and has developed a steady trade, with its winter and summer special menus and home made cakes for regular visitors from further afield. Extra helpers had to be called in when a coach load of people suddenly arrived one morning, and village events have also swelled the takings. Chairman of the management committee, Terry Sidley said yesterday "We are so pleased that because of the dedication of our volunteers, we have made a success of this venture, and people from other villages are now showing an interest and thinking of setting up their own community enterprises". North Curry had over 30 businesses only a few years ago, but one by one they have now closed, leaving only one public house and the post office and general stores, so the coffee shop has been a welcome addition to village life.   more...
