Town to take on Mangotsfield

TAUNTON Town will play Mangotsfield Town in the final of the Somerset Premier Cup following a superb 1-0 victory at home to Clevedon Town on Monday night.

Prolific striker Aaron Blakemore got the only goal of the game to see off Clevedon who are nine points clear at the top of the Southern League's Division One (W).

Mangotsfield Utd joined Taunton in the final likely to be played at Weston-super-Mare FC on Tuesday, April 25 after defeating Toolstation League outfit Street 5-1 on Tuesday.

Mangotsfield play one division above Taunton in the Southern League Premier and are mid-table.

Meanwhile, underdogs Taunton Town, without a number of cup-tied players, were fortunate not to be behind at half time on Monday night with Clevedon spurning a host of chances.

The best fell to Bristol Rovers trialist Jack Pitcher, scorer of 22 goals this season, who had two gilt-edged opportunities.

On 25 minutes, Pitcher headed wide with the goal gaping in front of him and, just before half time, he rounded Taunton keeper Tim Pearse only to put the ball wide of the empty net.

Taunton, who barely registered an effort on goal in the first half, went in front five minutes after the break.

Stuart Walford sent a hopeful ball over the top, Blakemore out paced the defence, expertly brought the ball down and rifled a low shot past keeper Ray Johnston. That was his 18th goal since joining in December.

Despite pinning Taunton in their half for much of the second half, Clevedon failed to create any clear-cut chances. Taunton's centre back pairing of Sam Jones and Matt Thorne were excellent as the hosts held on for a famous win.
