Boxing brothers impress in debuts

From the Burnham & Highbridge Weekly News, first published Saturday 1st Apr 2006.

BOXING brothers Lewis and Ben Stacey, of Burnham's Titans ABC, both did well in their competitive debuts at Barbarians Rugby Club, Minehead.

Lewis (10) was matched with Watchet ABC's Callum Murphy in a skills bout. From the opening bell, you would not have known this was a non-decision bout as both boxers showed great determination.

The first round saw good exchange of punches with fine defensive skills on show. In the second, Stacey really found his feet and was moving around the ring like a seasoned professional. Round three saw him come out with new-found determination and take the fight to Murphy, showing good skill and narrowly missing with good combinations.

At the final bell, both boxers had given their all and got rousing applause.

Eleven-year-old Ben Stacey appeared in his first decision bout against Watchet's Richard Boggie. In the opening round, it became clear that Stacey's strength would be the key to overcoming the determined Boggie. Both exchanged accurate blows, with Stacey finishing the round on top.

The second round showed much of the same, with Stacey having the more effective jab. In round three, both tired, as they had given their all. At the final bell, Stacey was deservedly awarded a unanimous points decision. All his hard work in training seemed to pay off. Well done lads!

On the same bill, Titans' Carl Hartnup met Kade Sherlock (Avalon). After a ferocious start in which they exchanged flurries of punches, Hartnup developed a nose-bleed, giving the referee no option but to stop the bout at the end of the first round in favour of Sherlock.
