Popside will remain loyal

From the archive, first published Wednesday 11th Feb 2004.

Torquay United chairman Mike Bateson has confirmed that the club will not be handing over the Popside to Yeovil fans when they come to Plainmoor later in the year.

Rumours had begun to circulate that Bateson was preparing to give all - or some - of the home fans' terrace over to Town fans to take advantage of the number of supporters likely to follow their team down to Devon.

But this week he has announced that he has no intention of doing so.

The United supremo has given over the Popside to Birmingham and Plymouth fans in the past, and half of the Popside was handed over to Northampton on the last day of the 1999-2000 season when the Coddlers needed a win to go up and United a point to get into the play off.

It turned out to be Northampton's day.
