Fitness fans have been pulling weights instead of pints at the former bar in the Mayflower Centre.
The bar area at the centre in Central Park has been transformed into a fitness suite complete with treadmills, weights and running machines. The area has also been given a makeover and has new carpets and a fresh coat of paint.
Facility Manager Sally Dean said: 'The old gym was located at the back of the building and many people who visited the centre did not know it existed.
'The regulars love the new-look gym and we have signed up many new customers since it was revamped.'
Councillor Peter Smith, Portfolio Holder for Sports, Leisure and Culture, visited the new-look gym to see the transformation for himself. He said: 'If you want to get fit, without breaking the bank this is the perfect place to get on your bike.'
The centre still has a portable bar, which can be used for functions and special events. Membership of the gym costs £20 a month and £54 for three months.
There is a discount available for Plymcard holders who wish to join up and use the rest of the facilities, for sports such as volleyball, badminton, bowling, five-a-side football, over 50s club and table tennis and much more.
